Anakabayan USA joins the Filipino youth in celebration of the safe release of Jonila Castro and Jhed Tamano from the clutches of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
We condemn the NTF-ELCAC for its barefaced contortion of the truth in an utterly failed attempt to frame Jonila and Jhed as rebel surrenderees captured by the 70th Infantry Battalion (IB) of the AFP. In reality, Jonila and Jhed are environmental and community activists fighting the restoration projects in Manila Bay which deprive fisherfolk of their livelihood. Their abduction by the AFP is further proof of the Marcos Jr. regime’s anti-people agenda.
On September 19 the NTF-ELCAC, constructed a press conference with the expectation of the Orion 2's cooperation to espouse the false narrative of their surrender. Immediately after the Orion 2 exposed the truth of their situation under military custody, the NTF-ELCAC took down their Facebook livestream in an attempt to diminish the effect of the Orion 2's exposé. It is clear that the NTF-ELCAC’s fantasies were thoroughly debunked by Jonila and Jhed’s daring testimony on the panel.
The Filipino youth commend Jonila and Jhed for tearing away the paper facade constructed by the fake news peddlers in the NTF-ELCAC and SMNI network, to courageously expose the brutal nature of the Marcos regime and its fascist minions. We especially extol their dedication to put the issues and interests of the masses at the forefront, even as they sat within their midst.
We hold the AFP and their commander-in-chief in Marcos Jr. liable for disappearing and unjustly holding the Orion 2 in military custody. On the eve of the 51st commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law, we denounce the US-Marcos II regime for their tactics of disappearing environmental defenders and youth activists!
